You will see me cry! (Winter 2022/23)
The work “You will see me cry” and deals with showing emotions in public, specifically crying.
It was done during the my Erasmus in at the Linking Bodies - Jewellery Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Being a very emotional person myself, letting out tears whenever and wherever is something I am familiar with. But not everyone lets their emotions flow like that.
Not everyone can allow themselves to cry, maybe because of their upbringing, certain stigmas or the fear of letting their guard down in general. I created transparent wearables that hold water dissolvable fabric right under the ones eyes. If the user cries, this will be instantly visible by the slowly melting fabric, revealing the emotions of the wearer in a heartbeat. The lasercutted glasses made of plexiglass come in five different shapes, loosely based on the way tears flow down on peoples faces.
To complete the project I did a photoshoot with my old Nintendo 3Ds, which has a build in camera. The choice has a very specific reason, I have been hyperemotional ever since I was a child, and the toy accompanied me through my childhood as well. These, maybe not ideal quality, photos give me the empowerment of seeing myself and others own their emotions through the lens of my childhood self. Sending the message that it’s not only okay to cry, but important to feel and listen to emotions.
