The project “scareable wearables” focuses on making the issue of sexual harassment, specifically in the context of catcalling and the discomfort that comes with it, more visible and empower victims of such incidents. Based on three animal defense mechanisms our team created three wearables that are made to explore claiming space in public and aim to give comfort and empowerment through visibilty. Promoting the idea that these events can not go unseen anymore.
As the team members have all been victims of catcalling several times aswell, personal emotion was also transformed into the garments.
Additionally, to showcase the amount of trouble, annoyance and discomfort one experiences when being catcalled, we made a public intervention:
By placing questions victims of catcalling have to ask themselves in public we want to raise awareness on this issue.
Scareable Wearable was exhibited during the “ICH UND ALLES UM MICH HERUM” Exhibit (2022) at Viktoria Wien.
The project was created in collaboration with Eva-Maria Lainer, Elizabeth Sharp und Rosa Sturm.
