ABCD - AIs behind closed doors (winter 2023)

Leaning onto an existing case of roomba recorded image leakage in 2020, where intimate photos of users got leaked through facebook, this short film speculates on an extreme case of data leakage and its consequences for humans and their relationship to AI household devices.

ABCD tells the story of a young human who gets attached to their cleaning robot. Their relationship intensifies and progresses, making the person crave physical contact with their robot and later pursuing these desires in the privacy of their own four walls. The roomba gets hacked and leaning onto the events of 2020, the private moments between human and machine, seen through the robots eyes, get leaked on the internet.

How does the human feel now, after such a betrayal? What does it mean to have intimate photos be shared with the whole world, without one's consent?

On one hand, the project deals with questions of privacy in the household, especially with the rise of integrating machines, equipped with artificial intelligence, in our own homes.
On the other hand, leakage of intimate sexual pictures, as well as nudity has never been this high. To expand the pool of responsible people to robots and household devices as well is a scary, but not so unlikely speculation on our future connection to ownership and bodies.

The project was created in collaboration with Eva Maria Lainer, Jose Maria De La Garza and Isabelle Wallner and got exhibited at the ARSE ELECTRONICA 2025.
